8 Random Facts About SstrokerjI got tagged byLexidiem to to do this thing that Mark (Panasonicyouth) started so over a mouth late here I am Marks rules were pretty simple: Only list 8 facts and then tag 8 other people to do the same thing. 1. I'm pretty much computer illliterate. I need a book to tell me what to do and most of the time that doesn't work. I loose a lot of stuff and haven't got a clue how to get it back. 2. I work for a 48 state irregular route trucking company and have driven over 3 million mile in 48 states and Canada . I've also been in the other 2 states and Mexico but not driving a commercial vehicle 3.Courtesy of Uncle Sam and the United States Marine Corps I've also got to visit Japan, Taiwan, Okinawa, and Viet Nam. 4. After I dropped out of college I was reclassified from 4F ( no one knows why I was 4F instead of 2S and I had never taken a draft physical) to (surprise ) 1A. Since I didn't want to get drafted I enlisted in the Air Force with the idea I might get stationed close to home ( Boy, was I dumb back in those days) which was close to Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Kansas. Because of the 4F I was rejected and they told me I would have to have waivers from congress even though I was going to get drafted, no problem, didn't really want to be in the air force anyway, I enlisted in the Coast Guard, then The navy, then the army all on a delayed enlistment from 90 to 120 day. Passed the physical for each and rejected because of the 4F. Then I decided I could really have something to bitch about if I got drafted after being rejected by all of the services so I enlisted in the Marine Corps on a 90 day delayed enlistment and since I new they wouldn't take me ( I mean they are particular ) I signed for 3 years instead of 2 ( I wasn't just dumb I was stupid with a capitol S ). Three days later I got a letter, my 90 day delay had been cancled and I didn't have to worry about the draft any more. 5. About 2 and a half years ago ( after much pushing, bitchin, laughin, etc by younger friends and relatives) just befor hurricane Katrina devastated the Mississippi gulf coast, I moved into the digital age. I bought both a digital camera (Olympus Sport 5500 ) and a cell phone and upgraded both several times. It would be hard to do without either now.
6. Now I use 2 cameras, an Olympus SP550UZ for when I'm not driving and when I am driving I use a Fujifilm FinePix S 5200. The shape and the long stationary lens make it much easier to hold against the window and sunvisor at the same time. It just works out a lot better and I think it's because the others with the lens that moves cause them to go a little out of focus. 7. Music has always been an importent part of my life and I have a wide annd varied taste .I think the most beautiful and varied instrument is the female human voice. But sometimes, not often I get a craving to sit and listen to "crying in your beer" music. Not that light weight type where the barmaid asks if "do you want some cheese to go with that whine" but the type where she crys " O Gawd, get out that new pack a razor blades" and after a while I feel in a much better mood (Notice most of the rest of the bar is too) and alls right with the world. 8. I get my internet connections from truck stop wi-fi services. A few are pretty good and some aren't too bad but some are hardley worth trying to hook up let alone paying for and I loose the connections fairly often and some times it may take several hours or even days to get back on just so I can log off. The best and fastest sites I've found are free and some of the slowest and worst are the most expensive. Since I haven't figured out how to add pictures to this yet I guess is it. I'm not going to tag any one because it's taken me so long and about every one I would tag already has been

I also got to see Japan and Okinawa, and also Crete and Turkey thanks to Uncle Sam.
And ...
I also spent seven months at beautiful Keesler AFB in Biloxi MS.
#1. You're not computer illiterate. Matter of fact, looking at your photos, we all know better.
#2. Thought you must have covered all 48 lower states for work, but three million miles is truly amazing!
#3. Japan, Taiwan, Okinawa, and Viet Nam - typical USMC tour in the '60s. They did promise us travel, didn't they!
#4. Well, you did beat the draft. Semper Fi...
#5. Ths diffenence between you and the others of our age, you did move into the digital age, and probably do better than many half our age.
#6. Fujifilm FinePix S5200 (5.1 MP, 10x zoom) is rated pretty highly, as the newer Olympus SP550UZ (7.1 MP, 18x zoom), and both have image stabilization. So which do you generally like using better?
#7. Music? You're hiding your light under a basket here, 'cause your music tastes are some of the most varied and interesting than most that I've ever seen! But yes, must agree that the most beautiful and varied instrument is the female human voice.
#8. Interesting info about Internet connections from truck stop Wi-Fi services. Amazing that you can connect in so many places.
Learning to add photos here is just like anything else: RTFM... only there is no manual. Next time give me a shout, my friend. And even without a single photo, your list is far more interesting than so many that have been posted here.
Some of my best friends are Marines. FEMALE Marines. My boss is an ex-Devil Dog too. He hired me without any experience over two dozen other applicants because he said he would have wanted me on his sniper team. Whatever that means.: )
I enjoy your photos a lot. And I am humbled and inspired by your #8. Me too. Only libraries and coffee shops instead of truck stops.
I enjoy your comments and your perspective a lot. Pictures are overrated. : )
I have had an occasional run in with a BAM ( political incorrect term for a female marine ad have the highest respect for them. I ran into a couple of them from Camp Pendleton, Calif. right after Katrina. There were a number of them brought in to help with the cleanup.
Only about one out of a hundred that apply make it into sniper school. A lot can shoot expert but it's the attitude thats counts.
I appreciate your comments and enjoy your photos and journals a lot as well.
Thank you Pax
My experience with and ownership of Olympus products has gone back over a quarter of a century, back to the days when the OM-1 and OM-2 35mm SLR cameras were introduced. In fact my first two digital cameras were from Olympus, and I've been happy with them for the most part. Good experiences coupled with brand loyalty says a lot.
But... there are a lot of great digital cameras from others out there as well, and some with more advanced features as well, especially from Canon, Nikon, Sony and some others. Also had lots of experience with large format (4x5 & 8x10) photographic lenses from Rodenstock, Schneider, Nikon (now discontinued) and Fujinon, all mounted on Sinar view cameras. It used to amaze me (and many others) that the Fujinon lenses were so damn good when compared with European glass, yet were often priced at a fraction of the cost of the venerable European brands. That experience began to factor in as I reviewed what was available, and even more heavily when I began to read some of the camera reviews from the UK and Germany, where they can often be almost brutal in their tests, reviews and opinions.
So I made a decision, partially weighted by some of these picky reviews, partially by older and more experienced pro & commercial photographers that I've known (who don't give a damn what the name on the camera said as it came down to results) and also weigthted by what you had said here and in a phone conversation we had. Some brief hands-on experience helped a bit as well, then came the price/performance factor. All I'm saying at the moment is that I went with one of the newer FujiFilm FinePix "bridge" models, one similar to yours in term of good lens focal-length, with a zoom lens that doesn't retract (reminding one so much of a dog in heat) just like a good 35mm SLR.
So I thank your for answering that question both here and during our conversation, and will let you know just how well it works out. And I thank you for stating what you said here, for it made me take a second look... and that's always a good thing to do anyway.
